Baby Equipment Glossary & Baby Product Terms

Two in one:
A pushchair/pram from birth to toddler. The body of the pram can usually be reversed on the chassis to face towards the parent at newborn, and away when at toddler stage. The seat unit (the body of the pram) will recline to flat (to simulate a carrycot) and then move up into various sitting positions.

Three in one:
As a Two in one , with the addition of a carrycot. This extra body will connect to the same frame. This is a bed unit, which lies totally flat making it cosy and comfortable for the baby. Recommended by most mid wives, for a baby of up to an average age of 8 months, Many carry cot units do not have a 5-point harness inside. Always check the carrycot comes with mattress, If not this must be purchased separately.

Four in One:
As Three in One plus the Carry Tot car seat that will also connect to pushchair/pram chassis. This is a small sized car seat suitable for babies from birth to about 8 months. The car seat has a carrying handle so the baby can be moved from car to pushchair chassis as required. We advise this is as a useful carrying method in the short term, but for longer periods the young baby will not be lying flat and can become uncomfortable.

Travel Systems Pushchair and car seat
This is usually a pushchair with adaptors or attachments so that a car seat can be fitted on the top. With some chassis the body of the pram is taken off so only the car seat is placed on. The advantage in attaching the car seat to the frame is that it faces towards the person pushing (unlike on some other travel systems) and its high position on the frame gives the baby more room to move (therefore a moses basket is not required).

Cots and Cot Beds
From about 6 months a cot or cot bed can be used. Eventually the toddler can go into a small single bed or junior bed. As with cot beds these convert into a very small bed, possibly lasting the child up to 4/5 years.

Cupboards and Changing Units
Individual preferences are obviously important. Changing units can be improvised by finding a safe, flat surface possibly on top of another unit, although the baby must never be left unattended in such a position.

Pushchairs / Pram
Much thought must be given to find the correct pushchair to suit your lifestyle. Take plenty of advice before you buy. Consider whether you are you looking for a pushchair that will fold neatly, is light weight, easy to handle when travelling in car, bus or train, and will store well at home.

Nappies
(If not using disposable) Birth to potty packs or starter kits is a more economical way of buying.
